A lay of the land is literally the arrangement of features upon (and beneath) the land. It is wise and typically required to assess the lay of the land in preparation for action. For so many development, building, even purchasing decisions, you need to know what you are getting into. Navigating the regulatory and permitting processes can be tricky.
